City of Charlotte and Mayor’s Youth Employment Program – We are so grateful for the support of Mayor Daniel Clodfelter and the City of Charlotte. Mayor Clodfelter, along with Councilwoman Patsy Kinsey, visited Behailu Academy in the fall of 2014. We received a $66,000 grant from the City to support our afterschool program, specifically focused on strengthening the academic support and enrichment opportunities for our teens.
Two of our students, Rakala Townsend and Katende Mwalaba participated in the Mayor’s Youth Employment Program in 2014. Katende completed his internship in the Mayor’s office, while Rakala had an opportunity to learn about how non-profits operate through an internship with us at Behailu. Shavaunte Truesdale, Maeghan Brice-Keenan, and Jennifer Olvera participated in the MYEP’s fall 2015 Training program and look forward to their internships in summer 2015. Check out more about MYEP!

Central Piedmont Community College – We have been partnering with CPCC since 2013 through different programs and their Sensoria Event. CPCC students, including some of Behailu graduates, complete their volunteer hours helping out at Behailu through the Service Learning Department. We have partnered with CPCC’s MAN UP program to assist our seniors with registering for their classes. MAN UP participants and staff volunteer at our annual Thanksgiving Dinner, sharing their stories with teens, while serving dinner. We look forward to our third year participating at Sensoria Festival, this spring youth will explore the intersections of art, access, and technology through photography and film.

Playing for Others – We are one of Playing for Others’ 2015 HeARTbeat Honorees. In Fall of 2014, we received a $5,000 grant from PFO. This year, PFO granted scholarships to four Behailu teens to participate in their programming. Providing an invaluable enrichment opportunity for four of our youth.
